🤔 DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 The water in your glass is SUPER old. It has been round and round the world for millions of years. A dinosaur might have slurped that very same water! 🦕 Water never gets used up. It just goes on a very long trip — with no snacks!
For Young Explorers Ages 5–10 🔭
🌟 Chapter 1: Meet Your Drop 🌟
Say hello to Dot!
Somewhere in the sea, right now, one tiny drop of water is having a MASSIVE opinion. 💧
Meet Dot!
💧 **Dot: **"Salty. Salty. STILL salty. Has nobody else NOTICED?!"
Dot is right! The sea is HUGE and blue and VERY salty. Imagine drinking it. Yuck! 🤢
💧 **Dot: **"I have DREAMS! I want to be in a glass! Next to a BISCUIT!" 🍪
Good news, Dot. You are about to FLY! ✈️
💧 DOT THE DROP **Superpower: **Can be a liquid, a cloud, or a hard little ice crystal. **Favourite thing: **Going round and round the whole planet, again and again! **Least favourite thing: **WAITING. Dot is dreadful at it!
Let's follow Dot and find out where water really comes from!
☁️ Chapter 2: The Big Sky Circle ☁️
The sun shines on the sea and warms Dot up. ☀️
💧 **Dot: **"Ooh. Toasty! Is this the tap? ARE WE AT THE TAP YET?"
No, Dot. Not even slightly.
When a drop gets warm enough, something MAGIC happens. Dot turns into invisible mist and floats up into the sky!
That has a big science word. Let's learn to say it:
ee - vap - or - AY - shun
EVAPORATION! It means water turning into invisible sky-mist and floating up. 🌤️
And here is the BEST bit. The salt is too heavy to fly! It stays behind in the sea, so Dot floats up SALT-FREE. 🎉
💧 **Dot: **"NO MORE SALT! I am FRESH! I am FLOATING! I am a cloud CELEBRITY!" ⭐
Up in the sky it is cold. Dot squeezes together with millions of other drops. Squish! SQUISH! Together they make a CLOUD. ☁️
Then the cloud gets too heavy to hold everybody — and plop! Down they all fall as RAIN. ☔
PITTER-PATTER-PLOOOOOOP! 💧💧💧
💧 **Dot: **"AAAAAAAH! Is THIS the tap?!"
Still no, Dot. You have landed in a puddle. Next to a duck. 🦆
| ☀️ STEP 1 | ☁️ STEP 2 | 🌧️ STEP 3 | 🌊 STEP 4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun warms the sea | Mist rises and makes clouds | Rain falls on land | Rivers carry it back |
Round and round and ROUND. Scientists call this the WATER CYCLE. It has been spinning for billions of years, and it NEVER stops! 🔄
🤔 DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 A cloud is not fluffy cotton wool. It is millions of tiny water drops and ice crystals floating together. Walk through one and you would just feel damp and cold — like a very disappointing hug! 🤗
🪣 Chapter 3: Where We Keep It 🪣
Buckets the size of a valley!
Rain is lovely, but it does not fall every day. So people got CLEVER. We learned to SAVE water! 🧠
Here are three brilliant ways:
🏞️ THE RESERVOIR **Say it: **REZ - er - vwar **What it is: **A giant lake that people made on purpose, held in by a big wall called a dam. It is like a bathtub as big as a valley! 🛁
🕳️ THE WELL **What it is: **A deep hole dug down to water hiding under the ground. Yes — there is water UNDER your feet RIGHT NOW, soaked into the sand and rock like a sponge! 🧽
🏜️ THE SEA MACHINE **What it is: **A huge factory that takes salty sea water and pulls the salt out, so people can drink it. AMAZING! 🤯
That last one is the cleverest of all. And it has a MAGNIFICENT long word:
dee - sal - in - AY - shun
DESALINATION! It just means "taking the salt away". (De = away. Salin = salt.) 🧂➡️🚪
In very hot places, rain is rare. In the UAE — in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi — it is sunny nearly every day and the sea is right there. So engineers built ENORMOUS machines that turn sea water into drinking water! 🇦🇪
Some of these machines warm the water so it evaporates and leaves the salt behind, exactly like Dot did. Others squeeze the water very hard through a filter with holes so tiny that water slips through but salt CANNOT. Clever! ⚙️
SQUEEEEEEEZE... DRIP! DRIP! DRIP! 💦
Nearly there, Dot. NEARLY!
| 🌊 GOES IN | ⚙️ WHAT HAPPENS | 🚰 COMES OUT |
|---|---|---|
| Salty sea water | The salt is separated out | Fresh water to drink |
🚰 Chapter 4: The Secret World Under the Street 🚰
Now Dot is fresh. But how does Dot get to YOUR tap?
Under the street you walk on, there is a HIDDEN WORLD of PIPES. Big fat pipes and skinny little pipes, spreading out like the roots of a giant tree — right under your shoes! 🌳👟
First, Dot goes to a TREATMENT PLANT. This is where water gets its bath before you get yours! 🛁
SLOSH! RUMBLE! FIZZZZ! 🏭
🏭 THE TREATMENT PLANT **Job 1: **Catch the big bits — sticks, leaves, sand. **Job 2: **Let the little bits sink to the bottom and settle. **Job 3: **Push the water through sand and gravel to filter it clean. **Job 4: **Make sure no germs are left, so it is safe to drink!
Then Dot zooms along the pipes, under the pavement, up into your building — and out of your tap!
WHOOOOOOOOSH! SPLOOSH! 🚿💨
💧 **Dot: **"IS THIS THE TAP?! IS IT?! ...IT IS! I AM IN A GLASS! THERE IS A BISCUIT!" 🍪🥛
🤔 DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 Water also travels AWAY again! The water that swirls down your plughole goes into different pipes, to be cleaned all over again. Dot's holiday is NEVER over!
What a long journey for one little drop! Sea → sky → cloud → rain → machine → pipe → your glass. And you drink it in THREE SECONDS! Slurp responsibly, please! 😄
🔬 Chapter 5: Two Things To Try 🔬
Science you can do at home!
🧪 ACTIVITY 1: Take the Salt Out! (with a grown-up) 🧪 Do this WITH A GROWN-UP. No cooking, no boiling, no heat — just sunshine! ☀️
**You need: **a big bowl, a small empty cup, warm-from-the-tap water, salt, cling film, one small stone.
1️⃣ Ask your grown-up to help you stir lots of salt into the water in the big bowl. 2️⃣ Stand the small empty cup in the middle of the bowl. Do not let any salty water go in it! 3️⃣ Stretch cling film over the top of the whole bowl. 4️⃣ Put the little stone on the cling film, right above the cup, so it makes a dip. 5️⃣ Put it in a sunny spot and WAIT for a few hours. (Dot hates this bit!)
**What happens: **The sun warms the salty water. Water evaporates and rises. It touches the cool cling film, turns back into drops, rolls down to the dip — and drips into your cup! 💧
**The clever bit: **Salt CANNOT evaporate. It stays behind in the bowl — look for the white salty crumbs. The water in your cup is fresh. You just did what a desalination machine does! 🎉
🎨 ACTIVITY 2: The Home Water Hunt 🎨 Be a Water Detective! 🕵️ Find every place water comes out or goes in.
💧 WHERE? ✅ FOUND IT? 🤔 COULD WE USE LESS? Kitchen tap Bathroom tap Shower Washing machine Plant pot Then ask a grown-up: "Do we have any drips?" A dripping tap wastes drop after drop, ALL NIGHT LONG, while everybody is asleep! 😴
💧 **Dot: **"Drip. Drip. Drip. Hello? Still dripping! Nobody has noticed me since TUESDAY!"
🌍 Chapter 6: What YOU Can Do 🌍
Small hands, big difference!
Now you know the secret. Water is not made in the tap! It travels a VERY long way — sea, sky, pipes, filters — just so you can have a drink. 🥤
That makes every drop worth looking after. Not because anyone is cross — but because it is a brilliant thing, and brilliant things deserve care. 💛
🎓 REMEMBER THE 4 STEPS! 🎓 1️⃣ Sun lifts water up 2️⃣ Clouds carry it 3️⃣ Rain brings it down 4️⃣ People clean it and pipe it to you
🏠 Water Hero Habits!
-
Turn the tap OFF while you brush your teeth 🪥
-
Have a slightly shorter shower — sing ONE song, not three! 🎵
-
Tell a grown-up if you find a dripping tap 🔧
-
Give leftover drinking water to a plant instead of the sink 🪴
-
Ask a grown-up where YOUR town's water comes from 🗺️
💧 **Dot: **"That is my story! I am off to be a cloud again. Wave when I rain on you!" ☁️👋
"Thousands have lived without love. Not one without water." — W. H. Auden, poet ✍️
💧🌊☁️ Keep exploring! 🌧️🚰🌈
