A Fun Book About
Turning Old Things Into New Things!
📖 20-minute read | 🎨 Fun activities | 🧠 Cool facts | ✏️ Be a bin detective!
🤔 DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 A glass jar can be melted and made into a NEW glass jar again and again and again — and it never gets tired! Some materials are brilliant at coming back for another go. Let's find out which ones.
⭐ Featuring: one banana skin and one VERY serious wheelie bin ⭐
For Young Explorers Ages 5–10 🔭
🌟 Chapter 1: Where Does It Actually Go? 🌟
The bin is not the end of the story!
Meet Sergeant Skip! 🗑️
He is a wheelie bin. ONE wheel. TWO handles. And a job he takes VERY seriously!
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"ATTENTION! Lids straight! Bottles rinsed! Nobody sneezes on my cardboard!"
Sergeant Skip has never had a day off. He does not WANT one! 🫡
♻️ ✨ ♻️
You drop a juice carton in the bin. Whoosh — gone!
But it is not gone! Nothing ever really disappears. It just goes somewhere ELSE!
Follow the journey:
| STEP | WHAT HAPPENS |
|---|---|
| 1️⃣ | You put it in the bin at home. |
| 2️⃣ | A truck collects it. 🚛 |
| 3️⃣ | It goes to a big sorting building. |
| 4️⃣ | Machines and people sort it into piles. |
| 5️⃣ | Useful piles get made into new things. ♻️ |
| 6️⃣ | Mixed-up leftovers get buried or burned. |
RUMBLE-RUMBLE! 🚛 CLONK! 🗑️ WHEEEEE! 📦✨
That last step has a name.
LAND - fill
A landfill is a big pit where leftover rubbish gets buried under soil. It works, but the space fills up — and buried things can sit there for a VERY long time!
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"A VERY long time, recruit. Longer than you. Longer than your GRAN. Longer than gran's gran's ROLLING PIN."
🔄 Chapter 2: A Line or a Circle? 🔄
Here is the cleverest idea in this whole book. Ready?
Most things today follow a STRAIGHT LINE!
➡️ THE STRAIGHT LINE Dig it up ➡️ Make it ➡️ Use it ➡️ Bury it. The end!
A straight line always needs brand new stuff at the start, and somewhere to put things at the end.
But there is a better shape. A CIRCLE! 🔄
🔄 THE CIRCLE Make it ➡️ Use it ➡️ Collect it ➡️ Make it AGAIN ➡️ Use it again... round and round forever!
In a circle, today's old thing becomes tomorrow's NEW thing! Nothing gets wasted, because there is no end of the line!
Grown-ups call turning old things into new things this:
ree - SY - kul
RECYCLE means "to cycle again" — to send something back round the circle! 🔁
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"Circles! CIRCLES! I have been shouting about circles since 1987 and NOBODY listens!"
🤔 DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 Aluminium drinks cans are recycling superstars. A can can be collected, melted, rolled and refilled — and be back on a shop shelf as a new can in about six weeks! 🥫
🗑️ Chapter 3: Sort the Bin! 🗑️
Sorting is the MOST important job in the whole rescue team. Here is why!
The machines at the sorting building are brilliant, but SO fussy! Clean paper can become new paper. But paper covered in greasy food cannot — the mush spoils the whole batch. One dirty thing can spoil a big pile of good things!
Just then, a banana skin landed in Sergeant Skip's PAPER section! 🍌
SPLAT! 🍌
Everything went VERY quiet.
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"...There is a BANANA. In my PAPER. I have seen things today I cannot un-see."
It is fine, Sergeant! Banana skins are BRILLIANT — they just belong in the compost pile instead. One little move and everybody wins! 💚
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"Right. RIGHT. Moving the banana. Nobody speak to me for a moment."
Now let's meet the rest of the crew!
🥫 METAL TIN **Rescue level: **SUPERSTAR ♻️ **Why: **Metal melts and re-forms perfectly. Give it a quick rinse first!
🍾 GLASS JAR **Rescue level: **SUPERSTAR ♻️ **Why: **Melts back into glass again and again with no wearing out.
📦 CARDBOARD BOX **Rescue level: **GREAT ♻️ **Why: **Squash it flat and keep it DRY. Wet cardboard is much harder to rescue.
🍕 GREASY PIZZA BOX **Rescue level: **TRICKY ❌ **Why: **The oily part cannot be recycled. Tear off the clean lid — rescue half of it!
🧃 BENDY CRISP PACKET **Rescue level: **TRICKY ❌ **Why: **It is several thin materials glued together, and they are very hard to pull apart.
Here is your sorting chart:
| 🗑️ THING | WHERE IT GOES | TOP TIP |
|---|---|---|
| Glass jar 🍾 | Recycling ♻️ | Lid off, quick rinse |
| Metal tin 🥫 | Recycling ♻️ | Rinse away the beans! |
| Cardboard 📦 | Recycling ♻️ | Flatten and keep dry |
| Clean paper 📄 | Recycling ♻️ | No food, no grease |
| Plastic bottle 🧴 | Usually recycling ♻️ | Squash it, cap back on |
| Banana skin 🍌 | Compost 🌱 | Food loves the garden |
| Greasy box 🍕 | Greasy part in general waste 🗑️ | Rescue the clean lid |
| Crisp packet 🥔 | General waste 🗑️ | Check for special collections |
| Old jumper 👕 | Pass it on 💛 | Someone else can wear it |
🎨 ACTIVITY 1: THE BIN DETECTIVE AUDIT 🎨 Ask a grown-up first, then pop on some gloves! For ONE day, keep a tally of everything your family puts in the bin. Sort it into four columns: PAPER, FOOD, PLASTIC, OTHER. Which column is the biggest? Draw a bar chart! Then pick ONE thing from that column and think: could it go round the circle instead? Try again next week and see if the chart changes!
🔧 Chapter 4: Fix It and Pass It On 🔧
Recycling is brilliant! But there is something even BETTER, and it is much easier!
The best rescue is when a thing does not become rubbish AT ALL. 🌟
🌟 THE RESCUE LADDER 🌟 1️⃣ USE IT LONGER — the easiest win of all! 2️⃣ FIX IT — a wobbly chair just needs a screw! 3️⃣ PASS IT ON — outgrown, not worn out! 4️⃣ RECYCLE IT — send the material round again!
Think about your shoes! When they get too small, they are not broken — just too small for YOU. Somewhere there is a smaller foot that would LOVE them!
| 😕 PROBLEM | 🔧 RESCUE IDEA |
|---|---|
| Trousers with a hole in the knee | Sew on a bright patch — instant superhero trousers! |
| Toy with a loose part | A grown-up with glue or a screwdriver |
| Book you have read ten times | Swap it with a friend for a new adventure |
| Jam jar, empty | Wash it — now it is a pencil pot or a bug hotel |
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"Correct! An empty jar is not rubbish. An empty jar is a RECRUIT AWAITING ORDERS."
🌱 Chapter 5: Food Scraps Become Soil 🌱
Here is the tastiest circle of all! 🍎
Apple cores, banana skins, carrot tops and old leaves are not really rubbish. They are FOOD — for tiny creatures!
Worms, woodlice and creatures far too small to SEE munch through the scraps and turn them into dark, crumbly, brilliant soil!
MUNCH! 🪱 CRUNCH! 🐛 SLURP! 🌱
KOM - post
COMPOST is what you get when nature's clean-up crew finishes eating! Gardeners LOVE it, because plants grow strong in it. So the apple core from your lunch can help grow next year's apple! Round and round! 🔄
🪱 THE EARTHWORM **Job title: **Chief Muncher **Superpower: **Eats old leaves and scraps all day and turns them into rich soil.
🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"That worm has eaten for eleven hours without stopping. I have never been prouder of anybody."
🤔 DID YOU KNOW? 🤔 When food scraps get squashed into a landfill instead, they cannot get any air — and without air they rot in a smelly way that makes gas. In a compost heap they get plenty of air and turn into lovely soil instead. Same banana skin. Very different ending!
🎨 ACTIVITY 2: THE JAR COMPOST WINDOW 🎨 Fill a clear jar with layers: soil, torn leaves, a small piece of apple, more soil. Add a tiny splash of water! Keep it somewhere cool and look every few days with a magnifying glass. What changes? Draw your jar in week 1, week 2 and week 3. What has vanished? What is left?
♻️ Chapter 6: What YOU Can Do ♻️
You are officially on the Rubbish Rescue Team now! Here is your kit list! 🫡

🗑️ **Sergeant Skip: **"Outstanding work, recruit. The banana is in the compost. The jar is a pencil pot. I may actually take a nap."
He did not take a nap. He never does! 😴
♻️🥫🌱 Keep exploring! 🪱📦✨
