Everything Is Made of Tiny, Tiny Balls

Look at your hand. Look at a cup of water. Look at the sky.

Every single one of these things is made of teeny tiny balls called atoms. Atoms are so small you cannot see even one, even with a magnifying glass. Millions and millions of them fit inside a single grain of sand.

Most atoms just sit quietly and hold things together. But there is one special kind of atom that can do something amazing.

Splitting a Special Atom Makes Heat

Some atoms are extra big and a little wobbly. Scientists learned that if you give one of these special big atoms a gentle nudge, it can split in two.

When it splits, it lets out a burst of heat. Not a tiny warm feeling β€” a big, steady heat, like a stove that never turns off.

Splitting one tiny atom does not make much heat. But splitting billions and billions of them, one after another, makes enough heat to do something really big.

Heat Makes Steam, Steam Spins a Big Fan

Here is the clever part. That heat warms up water until it turns into steam β€” just like the puff that rises off your hot chocolate, but much, much bigger and stronger.

The steam rushes past a giant fan called a turbine. The steam pushes the fan blades and makes them spin round and round, very fast.

When the fan spins, it turns a machine that makes electricity β€” the same electricity that lights your room and charges a tablet.

So the whole chain looks like this:

  • Tiny special atom splits
  • Splitting makes heat
  • Heat makes steam
  • Steam spins the big fan
  • The spinning fan makes electricity

No Smoke Coming Out

Here is something wonderful: while all this splitting and spinning is happening, there is no smoke coming out of the chimney. A power place that runs on splitting atoms does not burn anything, so it does not send dark smoke into the sky while it is working.

That is different from a fire, which needs to burn wood or fuel and always makes smoke.

The UAE's Giant Atom-Power Station

Here in the UAE, there is a huge power station called Barakah. "Barakah" is an Arabic word, and the station is one of the biggest atom-splitting power stations anywhere in the world.

Barakah has four giant buildings, each one working quietly, splitting tiny atoms, making heat, making steam, spinning turbines, and sending electricity all across the country. Together, these four buildings make about a quarter of all the electricity the whole UAE uses β€” enough to help power millions of homes, schools, and hospitals.

People from many countries worked together to build Barakah. It shows what happens when clever engineers and scientists team up on one big, careful project.
