Long, long ago, people traded shells and salt. Then came shiny metal coins. Then paper money β lighter to carry! Then plastic cards you tap. And now? Money that lives inside phones and computers β money you can send across the whole world in seconds, like sending a photo to your cousin.
Money made of code
The newest kind of money isn't paper or metal at all. It's made of computer code, and it's kept safe by that chain-of-trust notebook we learned about β thousands of computers all checking each other so nobody can cheat.
Some digital money is looked after by a country's own money-keepers, like the UAE's Digital Dirham β a dirham that lives on computers instead of in your pocket. Other kinds, like Bitcoin, aren't run by any single country at all. The computers of everyday people all over the world keep them going together.
Wait β is that safe?
Good question! Digital money can be very safe when the chain of trust is strong. But just like real coins, it can be lost, and tricksters sometimes try to fool people. That's why the number one rule of digital money is the same as crossing the street: learn first, look carefully, and ask a trusted grown-up.
