It's true! Trees breathe in a gas called carbon dioxide, or CO₂ for short. You can't see it. You can't smell it. But it's floating in the air all around you, all the time.
A tree pulls CO₂ in through its leaves, like you sipping a drink through a straw. Then it uses sunlight to turn that CO₂ into wood, leaves, and roots. The tree grows bigger. And the carbon? It stays locked inside the tree, sometimes for hundreds of years.
That's why planting trees and taking care of forests is one of the oldest, best tricks on Earth. 🌱
🌊 The Ocean Helps Too
The ocean is a carbon-eater too! Tiny plants floating in seawater, called plankton, soak up CO₂ just like trees do. Mangrove trees — the ones that grow with their roots in salty water — are extra good at storing carbon in their roots and in the mud underneath them.
That's one reason the UAE plants millions of mangroves along its coast. Mangroves are like carbon-eating superheroes with their feet in the sea. 🦸
🪨 Even Rocks Can Help
Here's a surprising one: some rocks slowly soak up CO₂ from the air too! It happens naturally, but very, very slowly — like a snail's pace. Scientists are learning how to speed this up by crushing certain rocks into powder and spreading them out, so they can soak up more carbon, faster.
🌀 A Big Vacuum for the Sky
Now for the machines.
Imagine a giant vacuum cleaner — but instead of sucking up dust from your carpet, it sucks in air from the whole sky. Big fans pull air through special filters. The filters grab onto the CO₂ and hold it, just like a magnet grabs a paperclip. The rest of the clean air goes right back outside.
This machine is called Direct Air Capture. Scientists built it because trees and oceans can't clean up all the extra CO₂ people have put into the air. So machines help too — like a backup team.
Once the machine catches the CO₂, it can be squeezed tight and stored deep underground in rock, where it stays locked away — kind of like tucking it into a very, very deep drawer and closing it forever.

Think of it like cleaning a messy room. Turning off the mess-maker (using cleaner energy so we make less CO₂ in the first place) is the most important step. But the room still has old mess to clean up too. That's where trees, oceans, rocks, and machines all pitch in — each one a different kind of helper, working on the parts they're best at.
No single helper can do it alone. Trees are amazing but they take years to grow. Machines are fast but need a lot of energy to run. Together, the team works better than any one of them alone.

🟡 Middle path: We plant some trees and build some machines, but not quite enough. Progress happens, just more slowly than we'd like.
🔴 Slow path: We forget to keep planting and building, and the extra carbon in the sky keeps piling up instead of shrinking.
