Future Champions (Ages 11-14) | Circular Economy & Waste

Linear economy (now): Take → Make → Waste Circular economy (2050): Use → Reuse → Recycle FOREVER

THE PROBLEM WITH LINEAR

Current economy:

  • Extract resources
  • Make products
  • Use briefly
  • Throw away

Result: Trash mountains, resource depletion, pollution

THE CIRCULAR SOLUTION

Nature has no waste - everything cycles!

  • Dead leaves → soil → new plants
  • Animal waste → fertilizer → food

We should copy nature!

CIRCULAR PRINCIPLES

  1. Design out waste: Products designed to be repaired, reused, recycled
  2. Keep products in use: Repair, share, refurbish
  3. Regenerate nature: Return nutrients to soil

EXAMPLES

  • Phone: Currently lasts 2 years → trash. Circular: Modular design, repair forever, parts recycled
  • Clothes: Fast fashion → landfill. Circular: Quality lasts, rental services, fiber-to-fiber recycling
  • Food: Waste → landfill. Circular: Compost → soil → new food

YOUR 2050 CIRCULAR WORLD

When you're 38:

  • Products designed to last 20+ years
  • Everything repairable
  • Nothing thrown away (all recycled/composted)
  • Sharing/rental normal
  • Zero waste economy

ACTIVITIES

  1. Map lifecycle of 1 product (phone/shirt/toy): Where from? Where goes? Redesign it circularly!
  2. Fix something broken instead of replacing (YouTube tutorials!)
  3. Start composting food scraps (30% of trash = compostable!)
